Blending cultural heritage with contemporary design, one thread at a time.

Blending cultural heritage with contemporary design, one thread at a time.

This project marks my exciting debut into the world of textile design. Collaborating with Melbourne-based fashion designer Jody Kahlon and Sydney artist Carolyn Kenrick, I embraced the challenge of creating unique fabric patterns inspired by Japanese prints and mid-century aesthetics. This journey involved a fusion of artistic vision, technical expertise, and a deep appreciation for cultural influences.

Answering the Call of Fashion

Skills: Digital Design, Photography, Typography, Graphic Design
Software Used: Photoshop, Illustrator

My venture into fabric design began when Jody Kahlon, seeking fresh ideas for her latest collection, approached me with a unique challenge. Eager to showcase my versatility and problem-solving skills, I developed a range of design concepts tailored to her specific needs, demonstrating my commitment to meeting the demands of the dynamic fashion industry.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese prints and incorporating insights from another artist, I crafted a series of designs that seamlessly blended cultural heritage with contemporary aesthetics. This collaborative effort showcased my ability to translate diverse inspirations into cohesive and captivating visual narratives.

Nature's Palette

Carolyn Kenrick’s artistic vision inspired a collection of leaf patterns, each seamlessly repeating in hues of dark blue, pink, green, and brown. I then delved into the rich tradition of Japanese motifs, crafting intricate vector lotus flowers, delicate fans, and scattered maple leaves. These designs, characterised by meticulous detail and thoughtful colour selection, reflect a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and modern sensibilities.

The Joy of Materialisation

The colour palette, carefully curated to align with Jody Kahlon’s vision, included vibrant greens, pinks, coral, red, brown, and blue. Witnessing these designs come to life on Bamboo Viscose fabric was a thrilling milestone, marking the tangible realisation of my artistic vision. The joy of seeing the vibrant patterns materialise underscored the impact of my creative journey.

Embracing Mid-Century Elegance

The second phase of this project allowed me to explore my passion for mid-century aesthetics. The initial designs featured circles in a palette that evokes the era’s charm, showcasing a different facet of my design sensibilities. This ongoing exploration demonstrates my versatility and eagerness to experiment with diverse styles and inspirations.

The Evolution Continues

My journey into textile design is just beginning. This portfolio showcases the diversity of my work in this exciting new field, highlighting my ability to collaborate, innovate, and create designs that tell unique stories through fabric. With each new project, I aim to push boundaries, explore new techniques, and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of textile artistry.

This project is still developing and more creations will be coming soon.
