Transforming Jody Kahlon's vision into a bold and captivating window display

Transforming Jody Kahlon's vision into a bold and captivating window display

In 2019, I had the privilege of collaborating with renowned Melbourne fashion designer Jody Kahlon on one of her iconic window displays. This unique project centred on introducing letterforms to a suit, a novel concept that Jody envisioned. Eager to bring her idea to life, we embarked on a creative journey to develop the “Hello Glenhuntly” display.

A Blend of Materials and Techniques

Skills: Digital Design, Print, Hand Lettering, Typography, Painting
Software Used: Photoshop, Illustrator

The heart of the display was the “Glen Huntly” lettering, meticulously cut from thick blocks of MDF to ensure stability and prominence. To add depth and visual interest, I used a machine to carve 2mm grooves into the surface of each letter, creating a defined outline that guided the painting process.

After careful sanding and priming, I masked off the contrasting details before applying a vibrant red topcoat. The painting process was a labour of love, taking several days to complete. While sewing is my primary passion, I relished the opportunity to explore my artistic skills through this unique medium.

The 'Hello' Greeting – A Playful Counterpoint

Complementing the “Glen Huntly” statement was the “hello” lettering, also crafted from MDF. Designed to be positioned above the other letters, this playful addition was wrapped in cotton by Jody and integrated into the final window display.

Collaboration and Community Impact

This project marked my first collaboration with Jody Kahlon, and I was grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a talented and visionary designer. The “Hello Glenhuntly” window display graced the storefront for several months, garnering positive feedback from passersby and contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of Glen Huntly.

Following the display’s removal, the “hello” lettering found a new home within Jody’s shop, serving as a charming decorative element that enhanced the overall aesthetic. This repurposing exemplifies Jody’s commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness.

A Lasting Impression – Design That Resonates

The “Hello Glenhuntly” project not only resulted in a visually striking window display but also solidified my relationship with Jody Kahlon, paving the way for future creative collaborations. This experience underscored the importance of teamwork, innovation, and the power of design to connect with communities and leave a lasting impression.
